Meta's Phoenix Mixed-Reality Glasses Pushed Back: Anticipated 2027 Launch for Advanced Augmented Reality Experience
Meta has reportedly delayed the launch of its highly anticipated mixed-reality glasses, codenamed "Phoenix," to early 2027. This decision pushes back the release from the initially planned second half of 2026. The delay reflects a strategic shift towards prioritizing product quality and long-term viability over rapid releases.
According to an internal memo from Maher Saba, VP of Reality Labs Foundation, this change originates from CEO Mark Zuckerberg's emphasis on sustainable business practices and delivering higher quality experiences. The extended timeline aims to provide Reality Labs teams with more "breathing room" to refine the details and ensure a polished and reliable user experience. Executives Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns emphasized the importance of not compromising on quality, given the significant changes to the core user experience.
The "Phoenix" mixed reality glasses are designed to bridge the gap between existing VR headsets and true mixed-reality experiences. The device is rumored to sport a design similar to Apple's Vision Pro, featuring a goggle-like form factor and an external computing puck. This design choice aims to reduce the weight of the headset itself, enhancing user comfort for extended wear. While the glasses are expected to have lower-resolution displays and weaker computing performance than high-end headsets like the Vision Pro, they are also expected to weigh considerably less, around 100 grams.
The delay also coincides with potential budget cuts of up to 30% in Meta's Metaverse division, which has experienced significant financial losses. This increased financial discipline necessitates a clearer path to profitability for projects within Reality Labs.
Despite the delay, Meta is reportedly planning to launch a "limited edition" wearable device, codenamed "Malibu 2," in 2026. Details about this device are scarce, but it may be related to Meta's recent acquisition of AI startup Limitless, which developed an AI wearable pendant. Furthermore, a next-generation Meta Quest headset is also reportedly in development.
Looking ahead, Meta's long-term vision includes fully fledged AR glasses, with plans for an "Innovation" line of AR glasses for early adopters slated for 2027. These glasses are expected to be paired with less advanced and less expensive "Scale" glasses, as well as neural wristbands for intuitive control.
While the "Phoenix" release has been pushed to 2027, Meta continues to innovate in the AR/VR space. Recent advancements in Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses showcase the company's commitment to integrating AI and enhanced functionality into everyday eyewear. These glasses offer features such as real-time information, live translation, and hands-free video sharing. With the delay of "Phoenix," Meta seems to be betting on a more measured approach, prioritizing quality and market readiness to ensure a stronger position in the competitive mixed-reality landscape.
