Google is simplifying the migration process from other AI chatbots to its Gemini platform, offering users a smoother transition. This move addresses a major pain point for users invested in platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot, who may be hesitant to switch due to the potential loss of valuable chat history, customized settings, and established workflows.
The new "Import AI Chats" feature, currently under testing, is designed to allow users to transfer their complete conversation history from other AI chatbots directly into Gemini. This feature has reportedly been spotted in Gemini’s attachment menu. By importing their chat history, users can retain all the information and media shared in those conversations.
Google is also providing unified APIs, seamless data migration tools, and a familiar conversational interface. Gemini ships with a migration Command Line Interface (CLI) that extracts conversation logs, fine-tuned model checkpoints, and prompt templates from OpenAI's platform, converting them into a format ready for ingestion into Google Cloud Storage. The CLI supports bulk exporting of up to 10 GB per run, making it suitable for enterprises with extensive chat histories.
This initiative tackles the issue of platform lock-in, a common challenge in consumer technology. AI chatbots become personalized tools through long-term conversations, learning user preferences and adapting to their working styles. Starting fresh on a new platform can feel like losing a customized assistant. Google aims to counter this by providing an on-ramp for users already invested in other platforms.
While the "Import AI chats" option does not appear to migrate saved memories across platforms, it ensures users can carry over their conversational history when switching to Gemini. The process involves downloading the chat history from the original platform and then importing the file into Gemini.
In addition to chat migration, Gemini is also testing video verification and will soon offer image downloads in high resolutions like 2K and 4K. Google is also working on a feature called "Likeness," potentially related to authenticating or analyzing video content.
Google’s Gemini Enterprise is an agentic platform that provides access to Gemini models combined with Google-quality search connected across company data. Gemini Enterprise also has agents for complex workflows, such as Deep Research and NotebookLM.
