Samsung is pushing the boundaries of mobile technology with its next-generation creaseless foldable screens, designed to provide users with a seamless and immersive mobile experience. This innovation addresses a long-standing challenge in the foldable device market: the visible crease that appears on the folding display.

The unveiling of Samsung's creaseless foldable OLED panel at CES 2026 has generated considerable excitement. This display technology is expected to be a key feature of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8. The new screens aim to offer a smooth and uninterrupted viewing experience, resolving a primary concern among foldable device users.

Samsung's solution involves advanced engineering and materials. The new displays incorporate a metal reinforcement plate, which enhances durability without adding significant bulk to the device. Reports indicate Samsung is using a new laser-drilled metal layer under the OLED to distribute folding stress more evenly across the panel. This approach prevents stress from concentrating on a single fold line, which is what typically leads to the formation of a visible crease over time. The laser-drilling technology disperses bending stress across the panel, allowing for crease-free operation.

Samsung Display claims their advanced panel provides seamless text visibility across the fold from any viewing angle, a significant improvement over current generation devices. In addition to addressing the crease, Samsung is also focusing on overall display quality. The new creaseless panels will incorporate under-display camera technology and deliver enhanced overall display quality. Some prototypes even feature under-display cameras for a clean, uninterrupted screen. Furthermore, a second layer of ultra-thin glass (UTG) could be added above the backplate to further stabilize the panel and reduce wrinkles.

Samsung's pursuit of creaseless foldable screens signifies its commitment to leading the premium foldable smartphone market. By prioritizing the Z Fold 8, the company aims to attract a broader audience, including tech enthusiasts, professionals, and early adopters. Samsung is not just responding to consumer demand but also influencing the direction of the industry by focusing on larger foldable devices.

Interestingly, there are reports that Samsung might be developing this technology not only for themselves but also for Apple's first foldable device, which is rumored for late 2026. This suggests Samsung's determination to supply the best displays in the industry, especially with Apple potentially entering the foldable market.

Beyond the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung has also launched the Galaxy Z TriFold, featuring a multi-folding design that opens to reveal a 10-inch display. It is available in the U.S. starting January 30, 2026, priced at $2,899. The Galaxy Z TriFold has a custom Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, 16GB RAM and a 5600 mAh battery split across the three panels.

Samsung's innovations extend beyond smartphones. At CES 2026, Samsung Display showcased various OLED concepts, including a "Flexible L" display for cars and other applications.
