Motorola is poised to make a significant entry into the foldable notebook market later this year, challenging established players like Samsung. This move marks a new direction for Motorola, which has primarily focused on clamshell-style foldable phones since 2019. The company is expected to preview its book-style foldable, potentially named the Razr Fold, at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.
The Motorola Razr Fold is rumored to feature "brilliant displays, intelligent AI, and an advanced, boundary-breaking camera system," setting a new standard for foldable devices. While specific details are scarce, leaks suggest the device will have a design similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series, with a tall and narrow outer display and an almost square inner screen. This form factor is well-suited for multitasking and portrait browsing but may result in black bars during video playback.
One notable feature is the expected support for a stylus, reportedly named the Moto Pen Ultra. This stylus may have a replaceable tip, a side button, and a dedicated carrying/charging case. The inclusion of stylus support could differentiate the Razr Fold from competitors like Samsung, which has moved away from stylus support in its recent foldable models.
The Razr Fold is expected to come in two colors, with one variant sporting a carbon-fiber finish and the other potentially featuring a faux-leather finish. Renders show a squircle camera module with three lenses and an LED flash, reminiscent of Motorola's Edge series. An additional button on the side of the device could be a dedicated AI assistant key, similar to the Razr 60 Ultra.
Motorola's entry into the book-style foldable market comes as the popularity of foldable phones is on the rise. Counterpoint Research predicts a 38% increase in foldable phone shipments in the coming year, with book-style models leading the way. By undercutting Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip lineup with aggressive pricing in 2025, Motorola has already demonstrated its ability to attract consumers to the foldable market. The Razr Fold could provide a more accessible alternative to Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold series.
Motorola is also launching its new Signature series on January 7th, where they may showcase plans for the Razr Fold. Alongside the foldable phone, Motorola is expected to continue releasing clamshell-style foldables, with rumors of Razr (2026), Razr+ (2026), and Razr Ultra (2026) models in the works.
While Motorola is making strides in the foldable market, it's worth noting their recent expansion into laptops with the Moto Book 60. This laptop, however, is currently only available in India. It features an Intel Core processor, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and a 14-inch OLED display. The Moto Book 60 stands out with its Pantone colors.
The Motorola Razr Fold is poised to be a significant contender in the foldable market, offering innovative features and a competitive price point. With its expected launch later this year, the Razr Fold has the potential to disrupt the foldable market and provide consumers with a compelling alternative to existing devices.
