Microsoft is exploring the integration of semantic search within Copilot in Windows 11, aiming to significantly enhance the user experience. This update, currently being tested with Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs, promises a more intuitive and efficient way for users to find files and information using natural language.
What is Semantic Search?
Semantic search is a data searching technique that focuses on understanding the meaning and intent behind a user's query, rather than simply matching keywords. Traditional search engines rely on keyword matching, which can often lead to irrelevant or inaccurate results. In contrast, semantic search uses natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML) to interpret the context, relationships between words, and the user's intent to deliver more relevant results. For example, a traditional search for "affordable smartphones with good cameras" might only look for those exact keywords, while a semantic search would understand that the user wants a budget-friendly phone that takes high-quality pictures.
How Semantic Search Works in Windows 11 Copilot
The integration of semantic search into Windows 11 Copilot allows users to describe what they are looking for in plain language, without needing to remember exact file names or keywords. Microsoft provides examples such as "find images of bridges at sunset on my PC," "find my CV," or "find the file with the chicken tostada recipe". Copilot then uses its AI capabilities to understand the intent behind the query and search the computer for relevant files and images.
This new feature is currently limited to Copilot+ PCs due to the hardware requirements involved. These devices are equipped with Neural Processing Units (NPUs) that can handle the complex AI models required for semantic search, processing over 40 trillion operations per second without overloading the CPU or GPU. The semantic search operates locally on the PC, without requiring an internet connection. Microsoft has stated that data gathered during the search process is not sent to any other computer or to Microsoft. Users can also adjust permissions to control what Copilot can access, retrieve, or read within the Copilot Settings.
Benefits of Semantic Search Integration
Other New Features in the Copilot App
In addition to semantic search, the latest Copilot app update also includes a redesigned home interface. The new homepage displays recently used files, applications, and conversations, making it easier for users to pick up where they left off. The Copilot app references the standard Windows "Recent" folder to display these files. Users can also initiate a "Vision session" to get guided help with specific applications. Furthermore, users can now upload a file to the Copilot chat window to summarize the content, identify objects in an image, or simply chat about it.
With the integration of semantic search and the redesigned home interface, Microsoft is making Copilot an even more valuable tool for Windows 11 users. These enhancements promise to improve the user experience by making it easier and more efficient to find the information and assistance they need.
