Google has unveiled its latest contender in the budget-friendly earbud arena, the Pixel Buds 2a. Announced alongside the Pixel 10 series, these earbuds aim to deliver a premium experience without the premium price tag, directly targeting competitors like the Anker Soundcore Liberty 4 Pro and Sony WF-C710N. A key focus has been placed on enhancing comfort and fit, with Google utilizing data from millions of ear scans to achieve an ergonomic design.
One of the most significant upgrades is the inclusion of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a first for the A-series. This feature, powered by Google's Silent Seal 1.5 technology, effectively blocks out ambient noise, creating a more immersive listening experience. For situations where awareness of surroundings is crucial, a transparency mode allows users to hear external sounds without removing the earbuds. While the ANC might not be as robust as the Silent Seal 2.0 found in the higher-end Pixel Buds Pro 2, it's designed to significantly reduce distractions during commutes or in busy environments.
The Pixel Buds 2a also boast improved battery life compared to their predecessors. Google estimates up to 10 hours of continuous listening with ANC turned off and an additional 17 hours via the charging case. With ANC enabled, users can expect around 7 hours of listening time on the earbuds and a total of 20 hours with the charging case. A quick five-minute charge provides approximately one hour of listening time with ANC.
Under the hood, the Pixel Buds 2a are equipped with a custom-designed 11mm dynamic speaker driver and a new high-frequency chamber. This combination aims to deliver clear and crisp audio, further enhanced by a 5-band equalizer that allows users to customize the sound to their preferences. The inclusion of the Tensor A1 chip, also found in the Pixel Buds Pro 2, enables improved audio processing, clear calls, and access to Google AI features.
For clear communication, the Pixel Buds 2a feature dual beamforming microphones in each earbud, along with wind-blocking mesh covers. This setup, combined with AI-driven Clear Calling technology, ensures that voices come through clearly, even in windy conditions.
Design-wise, Google has prioritized comfort and a secure fit. The Pixel Buds 2a are the lightest and smallest A-series earbuds to date. They incorporate a "twist-to-adjust stabilizer," similar to the Pixel Buds Pro 2, allowing users to customize the fit for either a secure or relaxed feel. The earbuds also come with four different eartip sizes to ensure a comfortable fit for a wide range of users. The Pixel Buds 2a are IP54-rated for sweat and water resistance, offering protection during workouts and light rain. The charging case now also has IPX4 water resistance.
Other notable features of the Pixel Buds 2a include Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity, providing a fast and reliable connection. They also support Multipoint Connectivity with Seamless Audio Switching, automatically switching between devices based on which one is actively playing media. The Fast Pair feature allows for one-touch pairing with compatible Android devices, and the Find Hub app helps locate lost earbuds.
The Pixel Buds 2a are available for pre-order, with general availability starting October 9. They are priced at $129 and come in Hazel and Iris color options. While the Pixel Buds 2a do not support wireless charging, they offer a replaceable case battery, a welcome addition for extending the lifespan of the product.
