Samsung has commenced laptop production in India, marking a significant step in expanding its manufacturing operations within the country. The production is taking place at Samsung's Greater Noida factory, adding to the existing manufacturing of feature phones, smartphones, wearables, and tablets at the same location. This move aligns with the Indian government's push for domestic production and strengthens Samsung's commitment to the Indian market.

Initially, the laptop production will focus on meeting the demands of the Indian market. This suggests that Samsung aims to cater to local consumers first, potentially gaining a stronger foothold in the Indian laptop segment before considering exports. The company is yet to make an official announcement regarding its laptop manufacturing plans in India.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has expressed support for Samsung's expansion of advanced technology manufacturing in India. Following a meeting with Samsung Southwest Asia President and CEO JB Park and Corporate Vice President SP Chun, Vaishnaw affirmed Samsung's commitment to innovation and talent in India.

Samsung's manufacturing plant in India was established in 1996, making it one of the first global electronics manufacturing facilities in the country. Over the years, Samsung has become a major player in the Indian electronics landscape. The company operates the second-largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in India and is the second-largest exporter of handsets from the country, following Apple. While Samsung holds a strong position in the smartphone market, it is yet to establish a significant presence in the laptop segment.

Expanding into laptop manufacturing is expected to support Samsung's broader strategy of strengthening its computing ecosystem in India. The company already holds a 15% market share in the tablet PC segment, making it the second-largest player in that category. By adding laptops to its India-made product line, Samsung is positioning itself to meet the growing domestic demand while also potentially leveraging India as a future export hub.

This initiative reflects Samsung's continued focus on India as a core manufacturing base for future growth. The Greater Noida facility, which houses one of Samsung's largest mobile phone manufacturing lines outside South Korea, will be central to this strategy. The production of laptops in India is expected to create new opportunities for local talent and innovation, further contributing to the growth of the Indian electronics industry.
