After years of anticipation, Tesla has officially entered the Indian automotive market with the launch of its Model Y. The Model Y, Tesla's first compact crossover SUV in India, is now available with prices starting at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla also inaugurated its first showroom in Mumbai on July 15, 2025. Bookings are open, and deliveries are expected to commence in the third quarter of 2025.

Variants and Pricing

The Model Y is offered in two variants in India: Standard Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) and Long Range RWD, priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh, respectively. The significant price difference compared to the US market, where the standard variant sells for around Rs 32 lakh, is primarily due to import duties as the car is imported as a Completely Built Up (CBU) unit. While the base price includes the 'Stealth Grey' exterior and all-black interior, other color and interior options are available at an additional cost. The dual-tone black and white interior, for instance, adds Rs 95,000 to the price. Tesla also offers its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system as an optional upgrade for Rs 6 lakh.

Performance and Range

The Standard Model Y boasts a claimed range of up to 500 km, while the Long Range version extends it to 622 km. The Standard model achieves 0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range variant does it in 5.6 seconds. Both variants have a top speed of 201 km/h. The Standard Model Y features a 63 kWh battery and a 283 hp rear motor, while the Long Range variant has an 83 kWh battery and a 312 hp rear motor.

Key Features and Design

The Tesla Model Y showcases a minimalist design, characterized by a sleek front fascia, a blanked-off nose, and a smooth front bumper. Sleek LED daytime running lights (DRLs) are connected by a light bar, with the LED headlamps positioned below. The vehicle has a coupe-like silhouette, flush door handles, and 19-inch blacked-out alloy wheels with aero covers. The rear design is clean, featuring a full-width LED light bar connecting the two tail lamps.

Inside, the Model Y features a minimalist dashboard with a 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system that controls most of the car's functions. It also has an 8-inch display for rear-seat entertainment, heated and ventilated front seats with electric adjustment, a panoramic glass roof, multi-color ambient lighting, and a powered tailgate and bonnet. The steering wheel is a three-spoke unit with integrated controls, and the center console includes storage compartments, cup holders, and dual wireless phone chargers.

Technology and Safety

Tesla cars are known for their cutting-edge technology, including Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised features. The Model Y is equipped with eight external cameras and vision processing technology. Standard safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and parking sensors. The optional Full Self-Driving system offers advanced driver assistance features. It's worth noting that while Autopilot is available as an optional extra, the Tesla India website specifies that the full capability will be enabled in future updates, subject to regulatory approvals.

Market Impact

Tesla's entry into India is expected to boost consumer confidence in EVs and encourage infrastructure development, including EV charging stations. The Model Y will compete with other premium electric SUVs in the Indian market. Tesla is also setting up supercharger locations in Mumbai and Delhi.

With its advanced technology, impressive range, and minimalist design, the Tesla Model Y aims to make a mark in the Indian EV market.
