Sarvam AI, a Bengaluru-based AI startup, has been selected by the Indian government to spearhead the development of India's first homegrown sovereign large language model (LLM). This initiative falls under the IndiaAI mission, a broader effort to bolster India's AI ecosystem and establish the country as a leader in the field.

The selection of Sarvam AI underscores India's commitment to achieving strategic autonomy and fostering domestic innovation in AI. The project aims to create a robust AI infrastructure that is fully developed, deployed, and optimized within India, utilizing local talent and resources. Sarvam AI's LLM will focus on several key capabilities, including advanced reasoning, voice-based tasks, and fluency in Indian languages. The model is also being designed for secure, population-scale use, ensuring that it can be deployed effectively across various sectors and applications.

To support the development of this ambitious project, Sarvam AI will receive dedicated compute resources, including access to 4,000 high-end GPUs for six months. These GPUs will be provided through companies such as Yotta Data Services, Tata Communications, and E2E Networks, which have been empanelled to establish AI data centers in India. This access to critical technologies will enable Sarvam AI to build and train the LLM from scratch, positioning it to compete with some of the best global AI models.

Sarvam AI plans to develop three key variants of its LLM: Sarvam-Large for advanced reasoning and complex generation tasks, Sarvam-Small for real-time interactive applications, and Sarvam-Edge for compact on-device processing. These variants aim to cater to a wide range of applications, from citizen services to enterprise solutions, ensuring adaptability across various use cases.
