Bharti Airtel has solidified its position in the Indian telecommunications market by acquiring 400 MHz of spectrum in the 26 GHz band from Adani Data Networks Limited (ADNL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises. The definitive agreements, announced on April 22, 2025, mark Adani Group's exit from the telecom spectrum space and equip Airtel with additional resources to enhance its 5G services.

The acquisition spans six key telecom circles: Gujarat (100 MHz), Mumbai (100 MHz), Andhra Pradesh (50 MHz), Rajasthan (50 MHz), Karnataka (50 MHz), and Tamil Nadu (50 MHz). This strategic move enables Airtel to improve network coverage, increase capacity, and reduce latency, thereby delivering a superior 5G experience to its customers. The company aims to optimize enterprise solutions, consumer broadband, and various industrial applications using the high-frequency 26 GHz band.

Adani Data Networks secured this spectrum for approximately Rs 212 crore in a 2022 auction. However, the Adani Group was unable to deploy it for connectivity in its ports, airports, logistics, power plants, and other facilities. As per auction rules, companies acquiring spectrum in the 26 GHz band must commence commercial services within 12 months in at least one location in each telecom circle where the spectrum is held. Furthermore, by the end of the third year of allocation (August 2025, in Adani's case), spectrum holders must have at least 90 active network sites in each circle where they hold spectrum. Failure to meet these targets can result in financial penalties.

The transaction is subject to standard conditions and statutory approvals, as outlined in the Spectrum Trading Guidelines. Once the deal is finalized, Airtel is expected to leverage the newly acquired spectrum to strengthen its 5G infrastructure and cater to the increasing demand for high-speed, low-latency internet, particularly in metros and Tier-2 cities. This acquisition not only enhances Airtel's competitive edge but also underscores its commitment to providing advanced connectivity solutions across India.

This acquisition is a calculated step by Airtel to reinforce its 5G capabilities and solidify its market position. The company's proactive approach to expanding its spectrum holdings demonstrates its dedication to meeting the evolving needs of its customers and contributing to India's digital transformation.
