Amazon is significantly expanding its infrastructure footprint in Indiana with a planned \$15 billion investment in Northern Indiana to construct new data center campuses. The project aims to support the growing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing technologies. This investment is in addition to the \$11 billion already committed to St. Joseph County, demonstrating Amazon's long-term vision for the state.
This substantial investment will create 1,100 new, high-skilled jobs and support thousands more in the data center supply chain. These jobs will range from data center engineers and network specialists to engineering operations managers and security specialists. Moreover, the project is expected to support local electricians, construction workers, and fiber-optic technicians.
The new data center campuses will add 2.4 gigawatts of data center capacity to the region. These facilities are designed for scale and optimized for AI, machine learning, and next-generation cloud applications. Amazon stated that the facilities would maintain high standards in energy efficiency and sustainability. The infrastructure will mirror that used to support AWS' Project Rainer AI supercomputer.
Amazon is collaborating with Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) through its subsidiary, GenCo, to power the data center campuses. Amazon will cover the costs of new power infrastructure and pay fees for using existing transmission lines. This arrangement aims to protect local residents and businesses from increased power costs, and is expected to save Indiana residents and businesses approximately \$1 billion over 15 years. NIPSCO and GenCo plan to supply up to 3 GW of dedicated capacity with related transmission build-out.
Beyond infrastructure, Amazon is committed to workforce development in Indiana. The company plans to expand training programs related to data center operations through partnerships with Ivy Tech Community College and other organizations. These programs include data center technician programs, fiber optic fusion splicing workshops, and STEM awareness and learning opportunities for K-12 schools.
Since 2010, Amazon has invested over \$31.3 billion in Indiana, contributing over \$29.9 billion to the state's GDP and supporting over 24,500 full and part-time jobs, plus 27,500 indirect jobs. Amazon operates 13 fulfillment centers, 11 delivery stations, and existing data centers across the state.
The company has also made significant investments in renewable energy projects, including four solar farms and a wind farm. Amazon’s investment in Indiana signals the importance of the region in the AI infrastructure race, and positions AWS as a backbone for AI workloads.
According to Indiana Governor Mike Braun, Amazon's investment demonstrates Indiana's business-friendly environment. Mayor Josh Huddleston of Hobart said that the AWS project in the town would create nearly a thousand long-term positions. The new data center campuses are expected to be located within the seven-county northwest Indiana region.
