Google is set to significantly bolster India's digital infrastructure and AI capabilities with a planned $15 billion (USD) investment over the next five years (2026-2030). This commitment will establish Google's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in India, located in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. The announcement was made at Bharat AI Shakti, a Google-hosted event in New Delhi, preceding the India-AI Impact Summit 2026.
The AI hub is designed to accelerate AI-driven transformation across India by deploying Google's full AI stack. It will integrate powerful AI infrastructure, data center capacity, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network. This multifaceted investment includes the construction of a new international subsea gateway with multiple international subsea cables landing in Visakhapatnam, connecting to Google’s existing network. This aims to establish Visakhapatnam as a global AI and connectivity hub. The gateway will also help meet increasing digital demands and provide route diversity.
Google anticipates the AI hub will generate at least $15 billion (USD) in American gross domestic product (GDP) over five years (2026-2030) due to increased cloud and AI adoption and the involvement of American talent. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian stated the hub represents a landmark investment in India's digital future, enabling businesses to innovate faster and creating opportunities for inclusive growth.
The investment aligns with the Indian government's Viksit Bharat 2047 vision to accelerate the expansion of AI-driven services. India's Information Technology Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, thanked Google for the investment, noting that the digital infrastructure will significantly contribute to achieving India's AI mission goals. He also urged the industry to help reskill and upskill IT professionals.
The project aims to make Visakhapatnam a global tech hub and is expected to create over 180,000 jobs. This initiative is seen as a pivotal step in the next phase of U.S.-India tech cooperation, particularly as both countries prioritize the responsible development of AI. Google's chief, Sundar Pichai, communicated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about this development, highlighting the hub's combination of gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure.
