WhatsApp Joins the AI Writing Revolution: Introducing an Intelligent Assistant for Enhanced Messaging Capabilities

WhatsApp has officially entered the AI writing arena with the introduction of "Writing Help," an intelligent assistant designed to enhance messaging capabilities. This new feature, launched on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, provides users with AI-powered suggestions to rephrase, proofread, and adjust the tone of their messages directly within the app.

Writing Help aims to make message writing clearer, more professional, and easier to compose. The tool is readily accessible within both individual and group chats. Users can simply start drafting a message, and a small pencil icon will appear in the text field. Tapping this icon prompts the AI to generate alternative versions of the message, offering suggestions to improve tone, style, or clarity.

The AI assistant offers a variety of rewriting styles, including professional, humorous, supportive, or simply for error correction. For instance, a straightforward request like "Please don't leave dirty socks on the sofa" could be transformed into a lighthearted suggestion such as "Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!" or a humorous observation like "Breaking news: socks found chilling on the couch". Users can then choose to adopt one of the suggested versions, keep the original message, or tweak the AI-generated suggestions further. Recipients will not be able to tell if a message was rewritten using the tool.

Meta emphasizes that user privacy remains central to this new feature. Writing Help leverages Meta's Private Processing technology, ensuring that AI-generated suggestions are created without Meta or WhatsApp ever reading the original message or the rewrites. Messages remain fully private with end-to-end encryption, even when using the tool. Independent audits by NCC Group and Trail of Bits have validated the architecture, ensuring strong privacy protections. The company states that no data is stored on its servers, and neither the original messages nor the AI-generated suggestions can be linked to a specific user or read by company employees.

Writing Help is optional and disabled by default. Users must enable Private Processing in their app settings to access the feature and other Meta AI-based tools like Message Summaries. Once enabled, the pencil icon appears next to the text input field, and the tool only processes a message after the user taps the icon.

Initially, Writing Help is rolling out in English to Android and iOS users in the United States and selected other countries. Meta plans to expand support to more languages and regions later this year. The integration of Writing Help directly into the app makes it accessible to millions of Android users, including those with mid-range devices, and provides a convenient and secure alternative to phone-based or third-party AI writing tools.

With the launch of Writing Help, WhatsApp aims to provide users with creative control over their messages while maintaining a strong commitment to privacy. The feature reflects WhatsApp's growing role beyond personal messaging, particularly for business communications, by helping users sound more professional or quickly correct typos and grammatical errors. This move places Meta alongside companies like Telegram, Microsoft, and Google in integrating AI writing tools into messaging apps.
