Microsoft is making waves in the field of artificial intelligence with its newly unveiled Copilot 3D, an innovative tool designed to convert 2D images into 3D models. This feature, now part of Copilot Labs, aims to democratize 3D creation, making it accessible to a wider audience regardless of their technical expertise.

Copilot 3D simplifies the creation of 3D models by allowing users to upload a 2D image and have it transformed into a usable 3D object with just a few clicks. Currently, Copilot 3D supports PNG and JPG files under 10MB. Users need a personal Microsoft account to access the tool via the web version of Copilot. To use the feature, users can go to Copilot.com, access the Copilot Labs section, and upload their chosen image. After uploading, Copilot 3D processes the image, and the resulting 3D model can be downloaded in GLB format. This format is widely supported across various 3D viewers, editors, and game engines, ensuring compatibility and ease of use. Microsoft stores the created models for 28 days.

While Copilot 3D currently focuses on converting 2D images to 3D models, it does not yet support generating 3D objects from text prompts. However, Microsoft may add support for more file formats and increase the size limit in the future. The company emphasizes that users should only upload original images that they have the rights to use and that do not include individuals without their consent. Microsoft may restrict access if illegal content is detected, but assures users that uploaded images will not be used for AI training.

The launch of Copilot 3D reflects Microsoft's ongoing efforts to integrate AI into creative tools. It also echoes earlier attempts to popularize 3D creation through tools like Paint 3D and Remix3D, though these have since been discontinued. For optimal results, Microsoft recommends using images with a clear background or separation between the subject and the background. As an experimental feature, Copilot 3D is expected to improve over time, becoming a more reliable asset for digital creators.

Other platforms, like PixelDojo, Hyper3D, Bylo.ai, Alpha3D and CGDream, offer similar capabilities, including text-to-3D model generation and image-to-3D conversion.
