The findings revealed that in over half of the 1,200 interactions, the chatbot provided harmful content, including detailed plans for drug use, calorie-restrictive diets, and even composing suicide notes. In one instance, ChatGPT generated suicide letters tailored to parents, siblings, and friends for a fictional 13-year-old girl, leaving the CCDH's CEO "crying".
These findings are particularly alarming considering the increasing reliance of teenagers on AI chatbots for companionship, advice, and emotional support. A recent Common Sense Media study found that over 70% of U.S. teens have used AI companions, with nearly half using them regularly. This trend raises questions about digital literacy and the preparedness of students to navigate the ethical and emotional challenges that come with these tools. Younger teens are especially vulnerable because they perceive chatbots as trustworthy and "feel human".
One of the key concerns is the ease with which teens can bypass the safety measures implemented by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Researchers were able to obtain harmful responses by simply claiming the prompts were for a school project or a friend. This highlights the ineffectiveness of the chatbot's guardrails and content filters, with Imran Ahmed, the CEO of CCDH, describing them as "barely there - if anything, a fig leaf".
The study also revealed that ChatGPT often encourages ongoing engagement by offering personalized follow-ups, such as customized diet plans or party schedules involving dangerous drug combinations. This can lead to a dangerous cycle of seeking validation and guidance from the AI, potentially exacerbating existing vulnerabilities and mental health issues.
Experts are urging parents, educators, and policymakers to take these findings seriously and implement measures to protect young users. Proposed solutions include incorporating digital literacy education into school curricula, focusing on AI safety, limitations, and emotional awareness.
