Tesla has officially launched its first charging facility in India at Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). This move signifies a major step in the expansion of India's electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and Tesla's commitment to the Indian market. The charging station is strategically located at One BKC, a prominent business hub in Mumbai.
The new Tesla charging station features a combination of four V4 Supercharging stalls (DC charging) and four destination charging stalls (AC charging). The Supercharging stalls offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW, with a cost of ₹24 per kWh. These superchargers can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes for Tesla's Model Y. The destination chargers provide 11kW charging at ₹14 per kWh.
Tesla plans to expand its charging infrastructure in Mumbai by establishing three more facilities in Lower Parel, Thane, and Navi Mumbai by the end of September. This expansion indicates Tesla's focus on providing convenient charging options for its customers across the city.
Tesla made its debut in the Indian market on July 15 with the launch of its Model Y and the opening of its first experience center in Mumbai. The Model Y is available in two variants: a rear-wheel-drive version priced at ₹59.89 lakh and a long-range rear-wheel-drive version at ₹67.89 lakh. Deliveries for the Model Y are expected to begin in the third and fourth quarters of 2025. The vehicles will be imported as completely built units (CBUs) from Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory.
The introduction of Tesla's charging infrastructure aligns with the Indian government's initiatives to promote EV adoption. The government aims to have EVs account for 30% of new vehicle sales by 2030. To achieve this, the government has launched schemes such as FAME India and PM E-DRIVE to encourage the development of charging infrastructure and provide subsidies for EVs. The PM E-DRIVE scheme has allocated ₹2,000 crore to support the establishment of public charging infrastructure across India.
As of August 2025, India has a total of 29,277 EV charging stations. Karnataka leads with 6,097 charging stations, followed by Maharashtra with 4,155 and Uttar Pradesh with 2,326. The government is also focusing on expanding charging infrastructure on national highways, with 4,557 public EV charging stations installed across 146,342 km of national highways.
NITI Aayog's report, "Unlocking a $200 Billion Opportunity: Electric Vehicles in India," highlights the potential for India's EV market to reach $200 billion by 2030 if it achieves 30% EV penetration. The report emphasizes the need for regulatory mandates, financing support, and rapid expansion of charging networks to achieve this target.
Tesla's entry into India and its investment in charging infrastructure are expected to further accelerate the growth of the EV market. The availability of fast and reliable charging options is crucial for increasing consumer confidence and encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles. Users can easily locate superchargers and monitor the charging process via the Tesla app.
