The Google Pixel Watch 4 is generating buzz as its expected August 20 launch date approaches, with pre-orders starting the same day and wider availability slated for August 28. While the overall design is expected to remain similar to previous models, a key area of focus appears to be enhancing user convenience and internal improvements. One of the most notable potential upgrades is related to how the smartwatch charges.
Instead of fully embracing wireless charging, the Pixel Watch 4 is rumored to feature a redesigned, side-mounted charging system. Leaked renders suggest the charging contacts have been moved from the back of the device to the left side, near the speaker. This new charger will require the watch to be placed sideways onto a dock. The charger itself is described as a narrow pill-shaped design with an indentation containing two circular pins that align with the curvature of the Pixel Watch 4.
This shift to a side-mounted charging system offers several potential benefits. First, it could allow users to easily view the watch face while it's charging on a desk or nightstand, essentially turning it into a bedside clock. Renders indicate that while charging, the watch face will display the time, current charge percentage, and any upcoming alarms. The charging display looks to leverage Material 3 Expressive design, presenting the hour and minutes in separate containers with a ring indicating the charge status.
Secondly, reports suggest that this new charging system may contribute to faster charging speeds. The Pixel Watch 4 is rumored to charge up to 25% faster than the Pixel Watch 3.
Thirdly, relocating the charging pins could improve the watch's repairability. By removing the charging system from the rear casing, Google may have made it easier for technicians to access the internal components. The Pixel Watch 4 is expected to be the first in the lineup to allow for easier repairs, with a removable back panel for accessing internal components.
However, this change also means that existing Pixel Watch chargers will not be compatible with the Pixel Watch 4. While the new charging dock will reportedly be included with the Pixel Watch 4, it's not expected to include a USB-C power adapter. Any standard 5W USB-C adapter should be compatible with the dock. Google is also expected to sell the dock separately.
Beyond the charging stand, the Pixel Watch 4 is expected to come in two sizes, mirroring the Pixel Watch 3 lineup: 41mm (codenamed "Meridian") and 45mm (codenamed "Canari"). Both sizes will reportedly be available in LTE and Wi-Fi-only configurations. The watch may also feature a much brighter AMOLED display with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
While the main processor is expected to be the same Snapdragon W5 Gen 1, the watch will reportedly pair it with a new M55 co-processor. The 41mm model will reportedly feature a 327 mAh battery (a 7 percent increase), while the 45mm model may see a 9 percent boost to 459 mAh.
The Pixel Watch 4 is also expected to come with a wide range of band materials and colors, including a two-tone leather band in jade, a metal mesh band in matte black and polished silver, and many others in active, woven, and new gradient stretch styles. Rumored colors for the watch itself include Black/Obsidian, Gold/Lemon, Moonstone, Silver/Iris, and Silver/Porcelain.
