Elon Musk's vision of merging the nostalgia of classic American diners with futuristic technology has materialized in Los Angeles with the opening of the first Tesla Diner. Located on Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, the diner is not just a place to grab a burger and a shake; it's an "entertainment center" that combines a restaurant, drive-in movie theater, and a Supercharging station.
The Tesla Diner's design blends retro aesthetics with modern, high-tech features. The two-story building includes a 3,800-square-foot enclosed lower level and a 5,500-square-foot outdoor seating and food prep area. The venue features two massive 45-foot LED screens visible from the parking lot, creating a drive-in movie experience. The restaurant also offers rooftop seating. In addition, there are 32 V4 Supercharger stalls, with plans to expand to 75, making it the largest urban Supercharger in the world.
The diner serves classic American comfort food, including burgers, hot dogs, wings, and hand-spun milkshakes. The food is served in Cybertruck-inspired boxes, adding a futuristic touch. Customers driving Tesla vehicles can order food directly through their in-car screens, and the movie audio syncs with the car's built-in sound system. For those who prefer a more traditional experience, "Sonic-style carhop service" is available. Inside, a prototype 'Optimus' robot has been spotted serving popcorn at a pre-launch event. Bathrooms even feature windows that appear to look down on Earth from a spacecraft.
The concept for the Tesla Diner dates back to 2018, when Elon Musk first announced plans for an old-school drive-in restaurant at a Tesla Supercharger location in Los Angeles. Construction began in late 2023, and the diner officially opened its doors on July 21, 2025.
Musk has indicated that this is just the beginning. He plans to establish Tesla Diners in major cities around the world, as well as at Supercharger sites on long-distance routes. Another location is already planned for Starbase, Texas, near SpaceX facilities. The expansion aims to create "an island of good food, good vibes & entertainment, all while Supercharging!".
While the diner is open to all, regardless of the car they drive, certain features are exclusive to Tesla owners. These include in-car ordering and synchronized movie audio. The idea is that the unique experience might encourage some to consider buying a Tesla. The location is open 24/7.
The Tesla Diner is seen as a potential blueprint for a new retail category of charge-and-dine restaurants. It also taps into the West Coast diner culture rooted in classic cars.
