Meta is set to recommence training its Artificial Intelligence (AI) models using data from European Union users. This move comes after a pause prompted by data privacy concerns raised last year. The social media giant, encompassing platforms like Facebook and Instagram, plans to utilize public content shared by adult users within the EU to enhance its AI capabilities.
The decision follows approval from the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), which confirmed that Meta's approach aligns with the EU's stringent data protection regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This green light signifies a crucial step forward for Meta's AI ambitions in the European market, allowing it to leverage European data to refine its AI models.
Meta's AI training will utilize public posts and comments made by adult users, along with their interactions with Meta AI. This encompasses questions, queries, and other forms of engagement with the AI assistant. However, the company has explicitly stated that it will exclude private messages exchanged between friends and family, as well as data originating from accounts of individuals under the age of 18.
To ensure transparency and user control, Meta will be rolling out notifications to EU users via in-app messages and emails. These notifications will detail the types of data that will be used for AI training and explain how this process contributes to improving Meta AI and the overall user experience. Importantly, these notifications will also include a direct link to an objection form, enabling users to easily opt out of having their data used for AI training purposes. Meta has committed to honoring all objection forms, including those previously submitted and any new submissions.
